The girl, a student of the Ramgarh Women’s College, was attacked by the accused, identified as Vikash Kumar, when she was coming out of the Sondimara railway station halt, police said.

“My daughter was on her way home from her classes by the Barkakhana-Adra passenger train. Vikas was waiting for her,” said the girl’s father.

The girl is being treated at the Ramgarh district hospital, where she told the police that Vikas used to tease her but she turned down his proposal to become his girlfriend.

Barlanga police station-in-charge Jeet Ram Mahli said, “We have launched a manhunt for Vikas.”

“The victim is undergoing treatment. If needed we will take her to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS),” said Mahli.

India made acid attacks a separate class of crime in 2013 amid growing incidents of revenge on women who had spurned sexual advances or rejected a marriage proposal.

The Supreme Court in December ordered stricter measures to stop the sale of acid in India. The apex court also urged state governments to consider the inclusion of acid attack victims in the disability list to grant them benefits.
