Commonwealth Games 2022 Highlights Day 8: Medal rush in wrestling; India face shootout heartbreak in women's hockey SF

CWG 2022 Highlights Day 8: Bajrang Punia has won his second consecutive Commonwealth Games gold. Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia then made it three gold medals for India in wrestling before which Anshu Malik had won silver. Divya Kakran won bronze to make it five wrestling medals for India. The Indian women's hockey team, meanwhile, faced a shootout defeat to Australia.

CWG 2022 Highlights Day 8: Bajrang Punia has won his second consecutive Commonwealth Games gold by winning the 65kg final. Later, Sakshi Malik pinner her opponent to win the women's 62kg title and secure India's second wrestling gold. Deepak Punia then made it three for India by beating Pakistan's reigning gold medallist Muhammad Inam in the men's 86kg final. Meanwhile, Anshu Malik lost the women's 57kg final and settled for silver. Divya Kakran (68kg) and Mohit Grewal (125kg) have both won bronze, thus taking India's total medal tally in wrestling to six. Sprint star Hima Das will feature in the Women's 200m semifinal. The Indian women's hockey team faced a heartbreak in shootout as they conceded a 0-3 defeat to Australia after the match ended 1-1 at normal time. In badminton, Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu completed easy wins. 

KEY RESULTS:

PARA TABLE TENNIS: Bhavina Patel has assured of a medal, reaches Women's singles classes 3-5 final.

ATHLETICS: Indian men’s mixed 4x400m relay team through to final.

WRESTLING: Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia win gold, Anshu Malik wins silver and Divya Kakran and Mohit Grewal win bronze.

TABLE TENNIS: Achanta Sharath Kamal-Sreeja Akula through to semi-finals in mixed doubles, Manika Batra-G Sathiyan knocked out. Sreeja Akula through to women's singles finals. 

LAWN BOWLS: India assured a medal in men's fours after 13-12 win over England in semi-final

    Well how about that! Sakshi Malik has pinned her opponent and taken gold! She was down all the way Sakshi but then suddenly manages to get a takedown and then a reversal. She then actually pins her opponent and wins the bout itself, almost like how she did in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 when she extraordinarily won bronze. That was in the last minute, this one wasn't, there was a lot of time left in the bout and she wins gold here. What a moment for Sakshi Malik, she was in tears in 2018 when she could only win bronze but here she is now, with the 62kg CWG title.

    Well some drama in the end. It turns out that Anshu had thrown in a challenge but it is not upheld. The Indian looks visibly disappointed but this has been an excellent effort from her. Anshu through in a late salvo in the last 10 seconds and reduced the gap to two pooints but the Nigerian succesfully ran down the clock to win 6-4. Adekuoroye has finished with a hat-trick of CWG gold medals, Anshu takes silver in her first Games.

    Right then this is how the Indians lineup in the semis: 

    Mat A: Anshu Malik (57kg) is up first and she faces Nethmi Poruthotage from Sri Lanka. That will be followed later by Deepak Punia's (86kg) semi-final bout.

    Well it seems the “security concern” was noise that came after a a speaker fell from the ceiling just minutes after the first session began, according to PTI. 

    “Only five bouts could be completed when a speaker, used to relay announcement, fell near one of the mat chairmen, raising a safety issue at the Coventry stadium and arena on the opening day of the wrestling competitions. This was right after India's Deepak Punia had won his opening 86kg bout. The gathered fans were asked to vacate and a thorough check was ordered by the organisers, who fixed a restart of the session at 12:45 local time,” says their report. Just a reminder - wrestling bouts are set to begin at 5.15pm IST. We will keep you updated if there are any further delays.
