Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: Avinash Sable slowed off towards the end to conserve energy for the final

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Highlights: Avinash Sable became the first Indian to qualify for a final in track and field at the 2024 Paris Olympics by going through in men's 3000m steeplechase. Sable said that he deliberately slowed off in the end of his Heat when he saw that he had done enough to qualify to conserve energy for the final. He finished fifth in Heat 2....Read More

Sable's achievement comes as a bright spark for India on a day when athletes from the country fell while being agonisingly close to a medal twice. India's mixed team skeet duo Anant Jeet Singh Naruka and Maheshwari Chauhan battled hard but missed out on a bronze medal, losing 43-44 to China. Lakshya Sen, meanwhile, started his men's singles bronze medal well against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia but then went on to lose 21-13, 16-21, 11-21. All three, hence, joined the long list of Indian athletes who have finished fourth at the Olympics over the years.

Earlier, the Indian women's table tennis team consisting of Sreeja Akula, Archana Kamath and Manika Batra registered a 3-2 win over Romania to go through to the quarterfinals of the event. Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath won the doubles match with ease, followed by Manika Batra winning the first singles match and thus putting India within one win of reaching the quarters. However, Akula and Archana then lost their singles matches and Manika returned to for the decisive final game to take India through.

There was plenty of action for India on Day 9 of the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, with Lakshya Sen remaining in medal contention despite a defeat. The ace shuttler lost 20-22 14-21 to Denmark's Viktor Axelsen. After the defeat, Lakshya remains in the hunt for a medal and will fight for bronze. Meanwhile, in athletics Parul Chaudhary came eighth in the women's 3000m steeplechase round 1, failing to qualify further.

The men's hockey team were in fine form and defeated Great Britain on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time. In shooting, Vijayveer Sidhu and Anish Bhanwala failed to qualify for the final of 25m men's rapid fire pistol. India's boxing campaign came to an end as Lovlina Borgohain lost her women's 75kg quarter-final bout.

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: That's it for the day!

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: Well, a rollercoaster of emotions on Day 10 for India. Maheshwari Chouhan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka got India through to a surprise bronze medal match in mixed team skeet but they couldn't upset China and clinch the medal. Later came Lakshya Sen with a sensational start to his bronze medal match against Lee Zii Jia. But he faltered after the first game and missed out on a chance to become the third Indian to score an Olympic medal. It meant that the star-studded Indian badminton contingent failed to win a single medal in Paris, which is quite an unexpected result.

After that came a rather heartbreaking women's 68kg quarterfinal for Nisha Dahiya. She was two points away from winning by technical superiority when she started being rilddled with injuries and that led to her opponent overturing a 2-8 deficit to win 10-8. At the fag end of the day, Avinash Sable gave Indians something to celebrate as he sailed into the final. So good was he that he slowed down towards the end of his heat to conserve energy for the final.

His race will be happening late on Wednesday, early Thursday morning in Indian time. Tomorrow, there are two standout events. At 1.30pm starts the men's javelin throw qualifiers. India's Kishore Jena is in Group A and India's Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion, is in Group B. One event where India have a candidate to win gold, let alone a medal, and one of the few events where India have two genuine medal contenders. Then at 10.30pm, the Indian hockey players who had pulled off a miracle against Great Britain, play the game of their lives. They face Germany in the semi-final, looking to seal a second consecutive Olympic medal. Lots to look forward to! Goodbye and goodnight!

Extraordinary from the defending the champion.

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: The bout starts again and Pak quickly executes a takedown. She gets to 10 points and that is that. Nisha is wailing uncontrollably after the bout, the referee tries to pick her up. Eventually, it is Pak herself who consoles her opponent and pulls her up on her feet. Great display of sportsmanship there from the North Korean. There were a few boos that rang out in the arena right after that bout ended, let's hope it wasn't for Pak and if it was, let's hope those people's minds were changed shortly thereafter.

Nisha, like her idol and mentor Sakshi Malik, has shown just how much fight she has in her. She was in agonishing pain and yet she ground her teeth and went again, and again, and again. She still has a chance to make it to the bronze medal match via repechage, remember.

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: Badminton - Lakshya Sen loses 21-13, 16-21, 11-21 to Lee Zii Jia, misses out on bronze

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: Lee Zii Jia does it in the end. Quite an extraordinary match from him, he was almost down and out in the first game but he kept his attacking play going and errors started creeping into Lakshya's game. There were a couple of times in the first game itself where Lakshya left a shot that he thought was going long, only for it to be almost half a foot inside the line.

Lakshya thus joins the aforementioned list of great Indian athletes who have finished fourth at an Olympics. He is only 22 though and surely, surely he has at least one Olympic medal in store for him in the future. He is just too good to not have one. Take a bow Lakshya, you have gone to places at these Olympics that no Indian man has reached before this and only Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu have overall among badminton players from the country.

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: Athletics - A shocker in women's pole vault!

Paris Olympics 2024, Day 10 Live Updates: World indoor pole vault champion Molly Caudery was inconsolable after a disastrous performance on Monday saw her fail to qualify for the Olympic final in Paris. The 24-year-old Briton who was tipped for a medal skipped the two opening qualifying rounds at 4.20 metres and 4.40m, instead opting to come in at 4.55m. But Caudery's Olympic dreams were left in ruins as she failed in her three attempts at that height, far from the world-leading 4.92m she vaulted in Toulouse in June.

Caudery crumbled to the track in floods of tears and was consoled by teammate and Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw, who herself had gone out at the 4.40m mark. Caudery was at a loss to explain what had gone following her dramatic exit. "I'm shocked," Caudery told reporters. "So disappointed and I'm so sorry to everyone at home; I didn't have any excuse. Best shape of my life. I love big crowds. I didn't feel overly nervous. I don't have a reason right now for what just happened."
