Explained: India close to 1st Covid vaccine; what it may cost, how it’s made

<p>India has taken a crucial step towards approving a vaccine for Covid-19. A committee of experts assessing coronavirus vaccines recommended that the candidate developed by University of Oxford and AstraZeneca and manufactured in India by Serum Institute of India be cleared. The Recommendations of the Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation are now being assessed by the Drugs Controller General of India. It is likely to heed to the advice of the expert committee and issue a formal approval soon. As many as 300 million people will be immunised till July in the first vaccination drive. This includes health care workers, frontline workers, elderly and those with comorbidities. The expert panel did not recommend the India-made Bharat Biotech vaccine. It has asked the firm to expedite clinical trials and sought more details. Watch the full video for more.</p>

Explained: The 2018 Anvay Naik suicide case that led to Arnab Goswami’s arrest

<p>A big political war has broken out over the arrest of Arnab Goswami in a 2018 suicide case. A 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik had died by suicide, while his mother was also found dead at their home. In the suicide note , Naik had alleged he was being forced to take this step as he was not paid dues collectively amounting to <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>5.40 crore by Goswami and two others. Naik was the managing director of Concorde Designs Private Limited, which rendered services for Republic TV. Along with Republic channel, Naik had dues with two other companies namely Smartworks and IcastX/Skimedia. Anvay Naik's wife then lodged a complaint with Alibaug police against Arnab Goswami, Feroz Shaikh and Nitish Sarda for allegedly abetting their suicide. Later in April 2019, the police closed the case and cvited a lack of evidence against the accused for doing so. The case was taken up after a video posted by the late interior designer's wife was retweeted by the Maharashtra Home Minister who promised justice for the family. Bihar election 2020: From Nitish Kumar to Pushpam Priya, meet all CM aspirants

<p>While the upcoming Bihar election is being seen as a battle between Nitish Kumar led NDA and the Mahagathbandhan led by Tejashwi Yadav, there are several other claimants for the coveted post of Chief Minister. The LJP by parting ways with the NDA in Bihar has added a new dimension to the polls, several other alliances have also been floating around and have declared their own Chief Ministerial faces. While Chirag Paswan himself has not directly spoken about being a Chief Ministerial candidate, many within his party have called him a contender. Additionally, many pundits believe that the BJP could push out the JDU and form a government with Chirag as CM after polls. Other candidates who are eyeing the Chief Minister's post are former Union Minister and RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha. Sushant death | Poison test to lapses, AIIMS’ forensic findings: Reports

<p>From not finding any traces of organic poison in Sushant Singh Rajput's body, to the discovery of lapses in the autopsy conducted by Mumbai's Cooper Hospital - news reports have shed light on what the forensic analysis by All India Institute of Medical Science, Delhi may contain. AIIMS was approached by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to vet the findings of the first report which suggested that the probable cause of the actor's death was asphyxia due to hanging. Recently, the lawyer of Sushant's father tweeted that an AIIMS doctor had told him that the actor was strangled to death as per photographic evidence. In response, the counsel for Sushant's girlfriend and main suspect in the case, Rhea Chakraborty, said that a new medical board must be formed to prevent partiality in the probe. A day earlier, Maharashtra's Home minister had taken a jibe at the CBI for not presenting its conclusions in the case despite probing it for around a month and a half. To keep eye on China ships, India gives Dornier surveillance plane to Maldives

<p>In a bid to step up surveillance of Chinese vessels in the Indian Ocean Region, India provided Maldives with a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft. The plane was provided as per a government-to-government agreement for which talks had started in 2016. The plane will be operated by the Maldives National Defence Forces, while India will bear the running costs. The Indian Navy is training 7 Maldives personnel, including pilots, air observers, and engineers to operate the aircraft. Apart from keeping an eye on China amid persisting tension, the plane is also expected to help Male in anti-terror operations. In April 2020, ISIS had claimed responsibility for an arson attack at Mahibadhoo harbour. 4 speedboats, a sea ambulance and 2 dinghies had been set on fire. Maldives police said extremists or traffickers could have been responsible for the attack. The Dornier will help keep a watch on the isolated islands of the archipelago. Babri demolition verdict tomorrow: D-day for Advani & 31 others l Key details

<p>A special CBI court is set to pronounce the verdict in the criminal case related to the demolition of the Babri mosque on 30th September. BJP stalwarts LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Kalyan Singh and Uma Bharti are among the 32 accused in the case. Ram Temple Trust chairman Nritya Gopal Das and general secretary Champat Rai are also among the accused in the case. The verdict in the criminal case relating to the demolition comes months after PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This after a Supreme Court verdict in November 2019 had ordered that the disputed site in Ayodhya be given to the Hindu site for construction of a temple and had asked the government to provide an alternative site to the Muslim side for building a mosque. The Supreme Court had however called the demolition illegal. In April 2017, the top court had asked the special court to conduct day-to-day hearings and complete the trial within two years. After USA rebuke, India snubs Pak & walks out of meet over fake map | Explained

<p>Days after India and the United States of America reprimanded Pakistan for not taking action against terrorism emanating from its territory, Delhi embarrassed Islamabad further by walking out of an international meeting. The latest diplomatic altercation between the two Asian neighbours occurred at a virtual meeting of national security advisors of member-states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan's representative, used an incorrect map of the country as his backdrop. The map had been released by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in August this year. It laid claim to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and parts of Gujarat. After raising objections against the map and pointing out to the host country - Russia - that the map violated SCO meeting norms, the Indian side, led by Ajit Doval, walked out of the meeting in protest. Explained: Indian Army’s secretive Tibetan squad; why it’s key in China tussle

<p>Amid the continuing tension between India and China at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, the name of a secretive unit of the Indian Army - the Special Frontier Force - has been cropping up, especially with regard to Indian troops' action on the intervening night of August 29 and 30. The SFF played a key role in Indian soldiers gaining control of strategically important heights on the southern bank of the Pangong Tso. This Army unit, also known as Establishment 22, and Vikas Regiment, was set up in the wake of Chinese aggression in 1962. Ever since then, it has seen action on many occasions and combat theatres, but experts believe that this is the first time that the SFF has been deployed directly against the Chinese. What makes this fact special is that the SFF mainly consists of Tibetans, many of whom had to take refuge in India due to Chinese occupation of their land. Thus, their deployment in Ladakh amid the ongoing face-off is also a political message to Beijing from Delhi.
