According to PGI, the establishment of these satellite centres of PGIMER in Sangrur and Ferozepur in Punjab will help reach out to the underserved population in the far-flung areas through community outreach activities and by leveraging digital health care infrastructure.
The satellite centre of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has been struggling to attract students since its establishment seven years ago. The centre, set up to uplift education in the region, currently has less than 500 students against its capacity of over 1,000. Issues such as limited hostel capacity, lack of accommodation facilities, and transportation challenges have hindered its progress. The centre offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various disciplines and is seeking funding for further development.
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research's satellite centre in Una is set to have its own out-patient department (OPD) block by March 2024. This will provide specialty services under one roof and prevent patient referral to PGIMER.
