Mass movement: NCP takes SC verdict on Shiv Sena to people

On Monday, NCP organised a one-day seminar at Y B Chavan Centre, where former housing minister Jitendra Awhad explained how the verdict was in fact against the Shinde-led party and his government formed in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The seminar was attended by NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders.

He added that the court’s verdict was not limited to one party, and can be used by all the parties as it underscores the lack of defence of a split. “Those who were trying to escape in the name of the split cannot do so as this provision does not exist in the tenth schedule after paragraph 3 (which allowed a split) was deleted,” the NCP MLA said. Bit of a trouble in paradise?

BJP legislators in Mumbai Metropolitan Region have complained about the lack of funds provided by Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Shinde is a member of the Shiv Sena party, which is in a coalition with the BJP. MPs aligned with Shinde have also complained of being treated badly by the central government. Despite the bickering, Shinde is pushing hard to win the Mumbai civic elections, which would significantly damage the Shiv Sena's influence. The opposition space is also becoming crowded, with several parties, including AIMIM and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, preparing to contest elections.

BJP chief placates CM Shinde with seats and berths

Nadda, who was in Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday, held a closed-door meeting with Shinde, which lasted for over an hour. The duo discussed the strategy for the forthcoming elections, seat-sharing, cabinet expansion, coordination between the two parties ahead of the elections and the outreach programme as the ruling combine.

The Nadda-Shinde meeting and Nadda’s assurances are being seen as significant, given that BJP leaders had recently indicated that the Shinde Sena was a minor ally. The ongoing reports about Ajit Pawar and NCP MLAs being on the threshold of joining the BJP and subsequently the state government has also disturbed Shinde faction leaders. (HT PHOTO)
