Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana said a police team, led by SHO Kashmir Singh from Harike police station, pursued the two car-borne robbers.
Superintendent of police (D) Ajayraj Singh says the cops reached the spot after three villagers complained that Dharampreet was pelting stones at people. “He (Dharampreet) manhandled one of them,” he added.
The deceased has been identified as Rajwinder Singh, 38, son of Gurdial Singh, a resident of Talwandi Mohar Singh village. He was active in village politics and played a key role in the unanimous election of Raj Kaur as village sarpanch, police added.
In another incident on Friday, the BSF and Punjab police recovered a packet of heroin weighing 550gm from a farm field at Daoke village in Amritsar district.
