The US election process takes almost two years to get a new president in place. US election 2024 will be the 60th presidential election scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024. With over a year left for the entire process, the first Republican debate was held on August 23.
The US election process has four steps: Primaries and Caucuses, National Conventions, General Election and Electoral College. In a caucus, party members select the best candidate through a series of discussions and votes while in a Primary, party members vote for the best candidate who will represent them in the general election. National Conventions are held by each party to final the presidential nominee. Delegated from the primaries and caucuses endorse their favourite candidate who then contest the general election. In the general election, people from every state votes for one President and Vice President.
The Electoral College is a process in which electors or representatives from each state in number proportional to the state’s population cast their vote and determine who will be president. Each state gets a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress. There are a total of 538 electors selected according to each state’s policy. Each elector casts one vote following the general election and the candidate who gets more than half (270) wins.
In the US election 2024, three Democratic candidates so far are Joe Biden, the incumbent president, Robert F Kenndy (Jr), Marianne Williamdon. The Republican candidates are Ryan Binkley, Doug Burgum, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Larry Elder, Nikki Haley, Will Hurd, Asa Hutchinson, Perry Johnson, Mike Pence, Vivek Ramaswamy, Tim Scott, Corey Stapleton, Francis Suarez and Donald Trump.
