More about Dusshera:

After the nine days of Navratri, people celebrate Dussehra with lots of excitement on the tenth day. While this festival is commonly known as Dussehra in North India and Karnataka, in West Bengal, people celebrate it as Vijayadashami. Bengalis mark the day by bidding farewell to the idol of Maa Durga. There are also plays about the life of Lord Ram happening all over the country, and many people gather to watch big statues of Ravan being turned into ashes.

In the Hindu lunar calendar, Dussehra falls on Shukla Paksha Dashmi in the month of Ashwin, one day after Maha Navami or at the end of Shardiya Navratri. In Hindu mythology, this day marks the victory of Lord Rama over the ruler of Lanka, Ravana. According to another legend, Maa Durga vanquished Mahishasura following a nine-day, intense battle.
