A growing body of evidence indicates that Omicron is more likely to infect the throat than the lungs. Early lab data and studies (yet to be peer-reviewed) throw light on mild disease. Omicron does not damage the lungs as much as the Delta and other coronavirus variants. It is widely believed that serious illness from Covid-19 occurs once the virus gets into the lungs. Experts say that chances of serious illness drop if coronavirus can be contained in the upper airways.
