Mumbai auction house Pundole’s made history on February 24, when the 57 lots in their Glenbarra: A Lasting Legacy sale fetched a cumulative ₹155 crore ($20.68 million), the highest ever for a single Indian art auction. An untitled 1969 abstract work by VS Gaitonde fetched ₹42 crore, the highest price paid for an Indian artwork at auction. Dadiba Pundole, who heads the auction house, explains his early responses to the work, and its place in art history.
