Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's resignation: 10 points to know

Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on August 5, confirmed Army chief Waker uz Zaman.

Hasina fled the country with her sister amid a massive protest after the protestors stormed into her palace. The ousted minister landed at Ghaziabad's Hindon Air Base near New Delhi in a C-130 Hercules aircraft.

The Indian government called for an all-party meeting over the current political upheaval in Bangladesh on August 6.

Sheikh Hasina's resignation follows mass protest in Dhaka, where thousands took to the streets.

Around 300 people lost their lives over the past month as authorities cracked down on anti-government demonstrations.

The student protests began against a quota system that reserved up to 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

The movement evolved into an anti-government uprising demanding the resignation of Hasina and her cabinet, whom they blame for violence.

At least 11,000 people have been arrested recently. Hasina offered to talk with student leaders before fleeing but a coordinator refused and announced a one-point demand for her resignation.

Hasina responded to the uprising by accusing demonstrators of "sabotage" and cut off the internet for a second time to quell the unrest.

Hasina called for an investigation into the deaths and to punish those responsible for the violence.
